FDSC 1000: ePortfolio Prompt 1

Updated: Sep 27, 2018

Being raised by a large southern family, I have been lucky to have eaten many delicious meals. Out of all the dishes I grew up on, my favorite is chicken and dumplings. While growing up, I spent most of my time with my Maw Maw who was the best cook in my family. She was an old-school cook and allowed me to eat many southern dishes that were made from scratch, such as, fried chicken, green beans, tomato macaroni, fried squash, fried green tomatoes, and many others. With every meal I ate, my favorite remained chicken and dumplings. The kitchen was my Maw Maw and I’s favorite place to be. Being in the kitchen and watching her take each ingredient and create something totally new was magical. She would let me make the dough for the dumplings and would show me how she boiled the chicken and how she made her own broth from the chicken. The memories I have from this time with my Maw Maw has led to me carrying on some of her best recipes.

Since I have a large family, I have eaten many things that I did not like. My least favorite food is fish. Being raised in the south, you are bound to attend a fish fry and my family has one at least once a year. I dislike fish because of the smell. Fish is a strong-smelling food and I have a good sense of smell and that smell sickens me. I have never been a fan of fish but at one family gathering I decided I would try it again. It was a fourth of July evening and it was blazing hot and they had just finished frying the fish. Once everything was done, I ate the fish and it was edible but nothing too special. Later that day, all I could taste was fish and then I became sick to my stomach. It was a rough night and took me forever to get that taste out of my mouth. Since that night, it has left a bad taste in my mouth, physically and metaphorically.
