Food & Food Science

At the start of this class, I had little knowledge of food and food science but as I have progressed through this course, my eyes have been opened. Within in this course, we broke down different aspects of food and food science such as food classification, composition, pathogens, safety, and packaging. This class helped to see how food’s composition helped in the classification and how their classification led to how the food can be prepared to eat. Having the composition broke down in certain foods allowed me to see how beneficial it is to humanity. This course put an emphasis on the pathogens that are associated with foods and how to prevent the spread of the bacteria. This course helped to better understand the importance of knowing how to prepare your food to make sure that you are being sanitary while doing it. After seeing different foods being broken down into their composition, it gave me a deeper concern for my health and showed me that I need a well-balanced diet to be healthy.

Since this course covers all food science, we covered how certain foods were made and what technology is used. Before this course, I did not know that certain foods, like cereals and funions were made by an extruder and that you adjust the shape of the food by the die. While showing how certain foods are made, we were also given a broad overview of how the food industry works and how it is impacting our environment. This course broke down some issues that are causing us to become more sustainable for our environment. This class helped me to gain a deeper understanding as to why we are striving to be more sustainable and how important it is for our world in the future. This course gave a new understanding of the importance to create a sustainable environment to sustain the growing population. Throughout this course, I was challenged to see what we are eating and see where they are coming from and how they effect you and the environment. This course as a whole helped me to become more aware of food and food science.
